This is what passes for logic in the mind of Barack Obama?
"The truth is that right after 9-11 I had a pin," Obama said. "Shortly after 9-11, particularly because as we're talking about the Iraq war, that became a substitute for I think true patriotism, which is speaking out on issues that are of importance to our national security.Isn't he just saying, "I've stopped wearing an American flag pin because it's just a patriotic symbol rather than a patriotic act." Truisms will get you nowhere, Senator.
Just to be clear, I don't care whether anyone wears a flag lapel pin. I have a good collection of lapel pins, but not an American flag. A lapel pin is an opportunity for a man in a suit to have some small badge of allegiance or affiliation, or to make some small statement. I usually bounce between a very nice Boy Scouts of America pin, my Heraldry Society badge pin, and one from Disneyland's Club 33. An American flag pin, really, is a pretty weak statement of allegiance - the most obvious pin in the box. I hold that members of Congress, if they are going to wear an American flag pin, ought to wear it crossed with their state flag. Most members of Congress need that constant reminder of who, exactly, they are meant to be representing.
Senator Obama is really just rolling out the old 'dissent is patriotic' line, as if we're supposed to be impressed by that extremely tired rhetoric. Or is this how Democratic senators still talk?
