When it became apparent in 2001 that the United States would have to invade Afghanistan and overthrow the Taliban, no fact gave me greater hope for Afghanistan's future than that they had a just man like Mohammad Zahir Shah, their former king, living in exile and committed to modern democracy and liberty.
King Mohammad died yesterday at the age of 92.
