Precisely my point.
In spite of all the potential for confusion presented by such a variety of names, I have never once heard any BBC announcer affectedly referring to "Deutschland" in the middle of an otherwise English sentence. No Guardianista has ever tried to correct me, saying that I ought to call the place Deutschland because that is what the locals call it. No purveyor of politically correct claptrap has ever accused me of being outmoded or insensitive or disrespectful for using a name so rooted in the past.So why the hell am I expected to refer to Bombay as Mumbai?

so they don't think you're talking about the furniture store, of course ;)
