I wasn't planning a series on racial politics, but as long as I'm on the topic, I'll cover something I meant to cover yesterday. Presidente Vicente Fox said a really stupid thing a few days ago. If you haven't heard, he said that Mexican workers take American jobs that even blacks won't do. He hasn't yet had the sense to acknowledge just how racist a comment it was.
What's got me annoyed is that he flew Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton down to Mexico to apologize. I wasn't aware that Jackson still held sway with anyone, but Sharpton at least had the grace to refuse Fox's crappy 'regrets.'
Why is Fox apologizing to those two clowns? Calling a couple race-baiters down to Mexico City certainly doesn't do it for me. Mexico's president insulted my countrymen, in a particularly nasty way, and I want a damn apology. Mr. Fox can e-mail me here personally, or he can address himself to our duly-elected leader, President Bush.
UPDATE: Oops. Shoulda read my NRO today. Jay Nordlinger has the same argument here. I developed it independently, which only goes to show that we're absolutely right.
