Big screwup on the part of the Drudge Report. The Base Closure lists came out this morning. There are two lists. One shows the bases to be closed. The other shows bases intended to absorb displaced units. Drudge has the latter list up on his page, labeled as the former. He doesn't have the former list, the important one, at all. I knew something was wrong when I saw they were closing Edwards AFB, NAS Lemoore, China Lake, Vandenburg AFB, Dover AFB, MacDill AFB, NAS Jacksonville, Pearl Harbor, Fort Leavenworth, Andrews AFB, NAS Pax River, Bethesda Navy Hospital, Nellis AFB, Kirtland AFB, The United States Military Academy, Fort Bragg, Wright-Pat AFB, Marine Corps Base Quantico, and, uh, Norfolk.
Call me crazy, but I don't think our military is gonna function well without all of those.
Anyway, the closure list is here. Notable closures include Cannon AFB in New Mexico, and Sub Base New London, in Connecticut.

Let's not forget Sub Base Bangor (home of the boomers) and Walter Reed Army Hospital. Those two *floored* me.

I wonder about the boomer fleet. Do you think those guys feel just a little directionless, wihtout the Soviet Union to worry about?
And while Walter Reed (with its remarkable and horrifying medical museum) will be a sentimental loss for the Army, it really does make a lot of sense to centralize DC-area medical operations at Bethesda - a much larger and newer facility. And some general will get an extra star for thinking to create a joint medical command. Voila.
